Preheat cast iron skillet over medium heat. Melt butter and toast buns. Set aside.

Turn heat up to medium high. Loosely pack ground beef into 1/4 lb balls. One at a time, place ground beef balls on the heated cast iron. Smash to be as thin as possible. Salt and pepper to taste.

Once burgers are mostly cooked through and the bottom has formed a nice crust, flip the burger. Add cheese and optionally cover with a tall lid until cheese is melted. Put onto a bun with your desired toppings. Serve and enjoy!
